Education is a Right

CORPORATE ORGANIZATION FEEDING PROGRAMME

The school feeding programme involves the provision of at least one meal of breakfast or lunch for the pupils on every school day. Many school children in Nigeria suffer from undernourishment and many sometimes leave home without being fed. It is also a common knowledge that children that are not well fed are prone to sickness and diseases. The benefits of a free school meal are many. Given the fact that most parents or guards find it default to adequately feed their wards therefore incorporating free meal project in the implementation of the UBE programme could help reduce the incidence of poverty and malnutrition within communities in Nigeria. For example in Bangladesh and South Africa when this programme was adopted, the country experienced a drastic increase in school enrolments, school drop out rates reduced and the general well being of children was given a boost. Another good example of the potential inherent in school meal can be found in a community in Sauri, India. There, a school head teacher, after finding a student population that was listless, miserable and performing poorly in the national exams started a food programme on her own. The result was that attendance shot up to 100% and the pupils test scores followed suit. The school went from 68th out of 353 schools in the district in 2000 to 7th in 2004. The school meal is that magical.
